Key Stage 4
At North Cambridge Academy and all Meridian Trust schools, Key Stage 4 is a three-year period of study, spanning years 9, 10 and 11. The subjects taught in this time can be seen as core and option subjects and the different study times attributed to each of the subjects can be seen in the tables below.
We believe this model of study gives students additional time to complete course content and explore the subject more fully – not just teach to the test. We can prepare students thoroughly with guided revision. A three-year KS4 also allows time for extra-curricular opportunities to explore higher level content – which prepares students better for sixth form or college courses and gives flexibility within the curriculum to have visiting speakers, workshops and masterclasses with less impact on other subjects.
At the end of year 8 students chose options, we offer a very broad range of subjects every year.
The core offers and requirement is that all students study:
- GCSE English Language and Literature
- GCSE Mathematics
- GCSE Science (Double award and for some students, triple award GCSE is offered. The decision on which award students will strive to attain in science will be taken towards the end of year 10 and after a rigorous set of mock examinations.)
- Religious Education, some students will opt to take this as a GCSE as well.
- Sport / Dance, all students will receive a minimum of two hours of sport or dance per week.
- PHSE taught during some tutor sessions, off timetable days and through subjects as described above.
Students then consider options from the following list which may change each year dependent upon qualification updates from the qualifications authority (Ofqual):
